Abstract

Detention is a problem with many health problems, including oral health. In a country such as Mali, information on the oral health status of prisoners is limited, especially to prefectures (Circle). For example, a cross-sectional study was conducted of a population of detainees at the Kangaba Detention Center in Mali to determine the prevalence of oral health conditions in these detainees. The study showed that the male sex was the most represented with 91.04% and a sex ratio of 10.16, the age group of 21-30 years was the most represented with 53.74% An average age of 22.4 years, a median equal to 9, and extremes of 21 and 27 years. Prisoners from 0 to 12 months of prison were the most represented, with 68.67% of the cases. Dental caries is the most common condition with 80.59% followed by periodontal disease with 64.17% of cases. Some inmates could have several ailments at the same time (dental caries, periodontal disease). The CAD index was 5.06 with predominantly decayed teeth. According to the tartar index, 61.17% had a level 3 tartar deposit, that is, no more than two thirds of the tartar tooth. These pathologies are very present in the poor populations living in promiscuity and precariousness in the image of our detention centers. Faced with this high prevalence of dental caries, a program focused on oral hygiene and the management of associated pathologies in the prison environment is necessary.
